15 Pairs of Flags That Look Almost Identical
March 8, 2026 · 6 min read
With 194 national flags in the world, it is no surprise that some look almost identical. Shared colonial history, regional color traditions, and common symbolism mean many flags evolved from similar templates. Here are the 15 most commonly confused pairs, shown side by side.
1. Chad vs Romania
Both are blue-yellow-red vertical tricolors. The only difference is a slightly darker shade of blue on Chad's flag (indigo vs cobalt). Even vexillology experts struggle with this one.
2. Indonesia vs Monaco
Both are red over white horizontal bicolors. The difference is in proportions: Indonesia's flag is 2:3, Monaco's is 4:5 (nearly square). Without measuring, they are indistinguishable.
3. Ireland vs Ivory Coast
Ireland is green-white-orange (left to right). Ivory Coast is orange-white-green. The colors are reversed. A common trick question in geography quizzes.
4. Mali vs Guinea
Mali is green-yellow-red. Guinea is red-yellow-green. Same three Pan-African colors, reversed order. Senegal is also green-yellow-red but adds a green star in the center.
5. Netherlands vs Luxembourg
Both are red-white-blue horizontal stripes. Luxembourg's blue is noticeably lighter (sky blue vs Dutch dark blue), and the proportions differ.
6. Australia vs New Zealand
Both have blue backgrounds with the Union Jack and Southern Cross. Australia has 6 white stars (including the large Commonwealth Star), New Zealand has 4 red stars with white borders.
7. Colombia vs Ecuador
Both use yellow-blue-red horizontal stripes. Colombia's yellow band takes up the top half. Ecuador's three stripes are equal width, and it adds a coat of arms in the center.
8. Norway vs Iceland
Both use the Nordic cross design with three colors. Norway is red background with blue-on-white cross. Iceland is blue background with red-on-white cross. Essentially color-swapped.
9. Poland vs Indonesia
Poland is white over red. Indonesia is red over white. Literally the same flag flipped upside down.
10. Senegal vs Mali
Both are green-yellow-red vertical tricolors. The only difference: Senegal has a green star centered in the yellow stripe. Without the star, they would be identical.
11. Italy vs Mexico
Both are green-white-red vertical tricolors. Mexico adds an eagle-on-cactus emblem in the center white stripe. Italy's green is also a slightly different shade.
12. Slovenia vs Slovakia
Both are white-blue-red horizontal stripes with a coat of arms in the upper left. Slovenia has Mount Triglav, Slovakia has a patriarchal cross. The shields look similar at a distance.
13. Bahrain vs Qatar
Both are red and white with a zigzag dividing line. Bahrain has 5 points and a lighter red. Qatar has 9 points and uses dark maroon instead of red.
14. El Salvador vs Nicaragua
Both are blue-white-blue horizontal tricolors with a central emblem. El Salvador's emblem has volcanoes in a triangle. Nicaragua's has a rainbow in a triangle. Nearly identical at a distance.
15. Russia vs Netherlands
Both are white-blue-red horizontal tricolors. Russia's blue is slightly darker, and the Russian flag has different proportions (2:3 vs Netherlands 2:3, but the visual weight differs).
