The 20 Hardest Flags to Identify
March 5, 2026 · 7 min read
Some flags are instantly recognizable — Japan, Canada, the UK. But others stump even dedicated geography enthusiasts. These 20 flags consistently have the lowest identification rates in flag quizzes worldwide. For each one, we include a memory tip to help you lock it in.

1. Eswatini
Look for the traditional Nguni shield and spears in the center. The blue stripes represent peace, yellow for mineral wealth, red for past struggles.

2. Comoros
Four horizontal stripes (yellow, white, red, blue) with a green triangle containing a white crescent and four stars. The four stars represent the four islands.

3. Lesotho
Blue-white-green horizontal stripes with a black Basotho hat (mokorotlo) centered on the white stripe. The hat is the key identifier.

4. Benin
Green vertical stripe on the left, with yellow over red horizontal stripes on the right. Unique L-shaped layout distinguishes it from other Pan-African flags.

5. Guinea-Bissau
Red vertical stripe on the left with a black star, yellow and green horizontal stripes on the right. Similar to Ghana's flag but vertical/horizontal split.

6. Burkina Faso
Red over green horizontal with a yellow star in the center. The star is the key — without it, you might confuse it with several other flags.

7. Djibouti
Light blue top, green bottom, white triangle on the left with a red star. One of the few flags to use this particular light blue shade.

8. Eritrea
Red triangle on the left pointing right, with blue top and green bottom. Contains a yellow olive wreath in the triangle.

9. Timor-Leste
Red background with black triangle containing a white star, overlaid by a yellow triangle. The layered triangles make it distinctive.

10. Turkmenistan
Green background with a vertical carpet pattern strip near the hoist. One of the most complex flag designs in the world.

11. Kyrgyzstan
Red background with a yellow sun containing a tunduk (the crown of a yurt). 40 rays represent the 40 tribes of Kyrgyzstan.

12. Vanuatu
Red top, green bottom, separated by a black triangle with a yellow boar tusk emblem. The tusk is a symbol of prosperity.

13. Mauritania
Green with gold crescent and star, plus red stripes on top and bottom (added in 2017). The red stripes are recent and often forgotten.

14. Sao Tome and Principe
Green-yellow-green horizontal with two black stars in the yellow stripe and a red triangle on the left. One of the less commonly seen flags.

15. Equatorial Guinea
Green-white-red horizontal stripes with a blue triangle and coat of arms. The silk cotton tree in the emblem is the key identifier.

16. Cape Verde
Dark blue background with a circle of 10 yellow stars and red/white stripes near the bottom. Looks somewhat like an EU-influenced design.

17. Central African Republic
Four horizontal stripes (blue, white, green, yellow) divided by a vertical red stripe. One of the few flags to combine vertical and horizontal elements.

18. Maldives
Red border surrounding a green rectangle with a white crescent. The red-green-white combo with the crescent is unique.

19. Kiribati
Red top half with a golden frigate bird flying over a rising sun, blue bottom half with white wavy lines. Highly detailed for a national flag.

20. Nauru
Blue background with a thin yellow horizontal stripe and a white 12-pointed star below the stripe. One of the simplest yet least known flags.
